We don't have a clue about setting the 2 gears to start with. We live in Maine and planned to go to the Fryburg Fair to see a shingle mill in action,,,but of course it's canceled. So, when we set the cedar stump in sometimes it will saw the butt of the shingle way too thick,about 7/8". Then the next pass it will saw a straight board.

In any case, the shingle mill purchased from Horace Main was only in use in Welles' mill for few years. The Welles sawmill was destroyed by fire on December 21, 1916. (New London Day, Dec 21, 1916, p 12.) The Lane shingle mill currently in the Ledyard Up-Down Sawmill building was donated when the building was restored in the 1970s.
