Brenda Mine Project Description Between 1970 and 1990 approximately 180 million tons of very low grade copper and molybdenum were mined at 30,000 tpd from an open pit mine, processed by floatation to produce a concentrate and the tailings deposited in a cross valley tailings impoundment constructed by the centerline method.
Westbank First Nation Chief Robert Louie says a project to rehabilitate the former Brenda Mines site west of Peachland and create compost from waste collected from Kelowna's Glenmore landfill, and possibly other landfills in the region, could generate hundreds of millions of dollars over the next 40 years. ... has an agreement with BC Hydro ...
"Following the acquisition of grinding- circuit data at Brenda Mines Limited for simulation purposes, various methods to mass balance the circuit were evaluated. Unfortunately, different answers were obtained for different balancing methods. A data-adjustment procedure was therefore developed. The procedure assumes that all ""best-fit"" criterion. BRENDA MINE SITE March 2023 3 1.0 INTRODUCTION The Brenda Mine site (the Site) is a former copper and molybdenum mine located approximately 22 kilometres northwest of Peachland, British Columbia (Figure 1-1). The Brenda Mine operated from 1969 until final closure in 1990, with mining occurring exclusively from one open pit.
The Brenda mine began production in early 1970 with measured geological (proven) reserves of 160,556,700 tonnes grading 0.183 per cent copper and 0.049 per cent molybdenum at a cutoff of 0.3 per cent copper equivalent [eCu = % Cu + (3.45 x % Mo)]. ... "The tailings pond retention dam of Brenda Mine was constructed to function only while the mine was operating. A temporary closure of the mine in 1984 put the dam at risk of breaching and Brenda Mines received approval to dump 2.5 million cubic meters of tailings water into Peachland Creek and Lake Okanagan.
Brenda Mines Ltd operated in the mountains above Peachland in the Okanagan Valley Of British Columbia, Canada, for 20 years until the mine closed in June 1990 due to the depletion of the orebody. During that time it produced copper and molybdenum concentrate with small amounts of gold and silver recovered from the copper concentrate.
The mine encompasses a surface area of 268.00 hectares or 662.24 acres, making it quite expansive. There is a single known shaft that provides access to the underground workings. The mining method employed in this pit is known as bench, also referred to as berm mining. The ore body present at the Brenda Mine is characterized as massive in form.
The Brenda project is in the Omineca Mining Division approximately 270 km N of Smithers and 450 km NW of Prince George in north-central British Columbia. The project is located 15 km NW of Centerra Gold Kemess Underground (KUG) & Kemess East Deposits, and 20 km NW of the past producing Kemess South Mine.
A Vancouver company is hoping to reopen a Peachland mine that's been closed for three decades. Flow Metals Corporation's aptly titled "New Brenda" is proposed on the site of the former Brenda Mines, which closed in 1990 as the copper and molybdenum ore reserves depleted. The site is approximately 3.5 kilometres northwest of Peachland Lake.
Already profitable, the mine became even more so when, in 1916, Cominco developed the processes necessary to separate lead and zinc ores in the milling process. Since that time, the mine has produced ore containing some 17 million tonnes of zinc and lead metal and more than 285 million oz. of silver for a total value, to the British Columbia ...

The July 2022 issue has a gripping account of BC dams and potential risks to tailings storage facilities (TSFs). It's entitled "B.C. has a growing mine waste problem." PWPA has been wondering about the state of the local Brenda Mine site, and had a tour a while back. Fionda's article is a "mine" of information.
