Allis-Chalmers' history as a manufacturer extends to the 1840's in Milwaukee. In 1914 the growing company entered into the farm equipment business. Over the years Allis-Chalmers was responsible for many innovations in farm equipment and grew to become one of the largest and most diverse manufacturers in North America.
The 180,s and 185,s were probably some of the most dependable and rugged tractors Allis Chalmers ever built. Especially the diesels. Our 180 diesel run rings around 3020 s in this country. It did more work and stood up better even though those folks would not admit to that. We had a gas 180 that was our loader tractor for a good many years.
The Allis-Chalmers Company was a major manufacturer of farming and industrial equipment in the United States for most of the Twentieth Century. Allis-Chalmers was headquartered in Milwuakee, Wisconsin with a major tractor factory in nearby West Allis (a town named for the company). Financial difficulties led to dissolution in 1985.
Allis-Chalmers and tractor pulling. By the late 1970s, A-C was a bit of a powerhouse on the pulling track, and they were proud of that. I'm needing some help identifying my Allis Chalmers forklift that the previous owner removed and discarded all of the information labels on. I'm thinking a 40 or 50, but not sure of the exact model. It has a Continental engine model: F163A and I found a "98306" stamped on the frame, but that is all that left.

When Allis-Chalmers owned Gleaner, Allis engines were used if possible. In the very early years they might have used something different, but remember the D-19/G-262 didn't come until 1960. When the GM industrial engines were used (not Chevrolet) Allis didn't make a gas engine anymore !! When Deutz owned the company we got Deutz.
1978 Allis-Chalmers 8550. In the early 1970s, Allis-Chalmers joined the ranks of the manufacturers offering articulated four-wheel drive tractors. They started by rebadging the Bearcat from Stieger in 1972 and calling it the model 440. This 160 horse tractor got them on the field as they developed a new model in-house.
